A propos de Montpezat …

Montpezat de Quercy is a pretty walled town which was founded by Alphonse de Poitiers and the Seigneur de Montpezat, around the 12th century.

The village is centred around its covered square and timbered houses.

Places to see include

-The town hall, built in 1842 on the same site as the old town hall which had been built in 1511,

-The old Ursulines convent and its 17th century cloisters (since turned into a school),

-The town’s entry gate, a listed monument built during the 14th century,

and not to be missed is

- Saint Martin’s collegial church built in Southern gothic style and founded during the 14th century by the cardinal Pierre des Prés, who came from Montpezat. Of particular note are the 15 Flemish tapestries (dating from the 16th century), which recount the life and legend of Saint Martin de Tours. They were made especially for the church and are a listed historic artefact.

After visiting the church, take time to wander through the shaded streets of old 15th century timbered houses where the church’s canons once lived.

On your wanderings you will come across several delightful squares - the Place du Bicentenaire, the Place du Réduch and the lovely little Frédéric Cayrou square, named after one of the town’s mayors who died in 1958. He was also senator for the Tarn-et-Garonne and an Occitan poet.
